You Need a Factory Reset: Scott Galloway’s System for Feeling better
And How I am applying it: This week in happiness
I wish you a great start to the week. I recently listened to a podcast with Scott Galloway (really incredible podcast episode by the way) where he shared his method for overcoming slumps.
He calls his approach Scafa or:
Sweat: Exercise.
Cleanse: Eat healthy.
Abstinence: Avoid mind-altering substances.
Family: Spend quality time with loved ones.
Affection: Connect physically and emotionally with others
This is a really good starting point if you are trying to get out of a slump, but I find that "family" and "affection" often overlap. In addition, I think that "abstinence" should extend to the use of technology. But I need a reset so here is how I am going to apply some of what Scott recommends.
My Personal Reset Plan: Camino de Santiago Retreat
To implement this reset, I plan to do a short retreat along the Camino de Santiago. I'm not planning to go all the way to Santiago, just a few days to find peace. Some of these items are in multiple categories because they help in multiple areas.
Body:
Sweat: hike, surf, swim and do yoga.
Clean: Eat whole foods and avoid ultra-processed foods.
Abstinence: Avoid alcohol and limit screen time.
Soul:
Nature: Immerse yourself in natural surroundings.
Meditation: Practice mindfulness daily.
Journaling: Reflect and document thoughts and experiences.
Mind:
Minimize unnecessary screen time; I am not bringing my computer (which is why this article is early lol.) I am using a Brick to block distracting applications; (not sponsored… yet.) and will be putting my phone in the bottom of my bag.
Connection:
Solitude: spend time alone, and connect to yourself and your body
Connection: meet new people on the trail and help them when you can.
Openness: Stay open to new experiences and connections.
This is what I am doing. Feel free to adjust any sections to better align with your personal experiences and intentions.
Better Vibes Exercise: take a day to try some of SCAFA, I bet you will feel good afterwards.
